It has never been easier to build a complete Great Ball Contraption (GBC) loop yourself! The GBC 40 Tippy Tilt Trays features 5 perfectly in sync trays which feed each other in a beautiful and mesmerizing way. The GBC can be used as a self contained loop or participate in a GBC layout. Using a more accessible LEGO Set and focusing on one single mechanism this GBC is by far one of the best GBCs to get started.
This GBC is entirely built using only parts from the LEGO Mobile Crane and can be referred to as model C of the 42108. This GBC makes sure you master the GBC building techniques and tricks so that you eventually also can build your own GBCs. By default the whole machine is powered by hand but it can easily be upgraded with any LEGO motor (more information in the building instructions).
Automation + Synchronization = Pure Satisfaction
The GBC 40 Tippy Tilt Trays features 5 perfectly in sync trays which feet each other over a length of almost 1 meter / 4o Inch! Once completely folded out you can cover up a span of over 1.40 meters / 55 Inch! This really is a unique module and puts all control in your hands! You can adjust the height, slope, input and output! Altogether, this smooth running module is a perfect GBC to get started in GBC building! Learn about mechanical automation, synchronization, timing mechanisms, gearing, clever lever systems and more.
The GBC Balls collect in the beginning of the GBC module where the input box is located. From there they will be picked up 1 by 1 or in pairs of 2 by the timings mechanism. This timings mechanism is triggered by the first tilt tray. Once in the first tray gets hold on the GBC Balls, the action follows very rapidly and the balls will flow from one tray to another, all the way till the 5th last tray. Due to perfect gear synchronization and mechanical automation the balls will always catch the next tray in pitch perfectly timing. The last tray drops the balls onto the catch tray. By default this catch tray guides the balls back to the beginning of the module so the ball flow never ends. However we includes a rotating system which makes it possible to point the output ramp in any direction you want (180 degree freedom). In this way you can guide the balls to another output (on to the next module). By rotating the knob on top you can control the height and slope of the module.
Fun Fact
Once we figured out all the mechanisms and functions we knew we still had to solve many problems. One of the biggest problems was making the mechanism work reliably and still making the complete structure very sturdy, using a minimal part count. Once again, we made it happen and it works beautifully.

amazing module. 6/5 if it could.

A bit disappointed because it looses some balls. Not sure if this is because I haven’t calibrated the trays correctly or not. Also the motor is working hard to turn everything. Will try to make it better.

A GBC quite large, considering the number of parts.
I like the possibility to add an engine which is better to appreciate the show.
And I note that it’s possible to adapt it for using with other GBC, a good idea.
The funnel is also a crazy thing, I love watching the balls spiraling, especially when you put a lot of them !
