Also have enough of constantly running out of batteries, swapping them out and wasting money on it? For LEGO projects that constantly use juice this can be really annoying. With our USB Power Box this will be something of the past and you will never have to worry about your batteries ever again. Good for the environment, good for your stress levels and great for your wallet!
Plug & Play
We have developed a compact and powerful USB Power Box which is 100% compatible with many LEGO power systems. No electronics knowledge is needed and installation is as easy as connecting the power connector to the compatible LEGO power system. Use any USB power source that you have available and our USB Power Box takes care of converting the power as efficient and optimal as possible. There is no battery inside! To power the USB Power Box you can e.g. use a USB smartphone/tablet charger, the USB port from your computer, a USB power bank or any other USB power source. Great to use on static models, like Great Ball Contraptions and powered display models, or use a USB power bank for your portable projects, like cars and trains. For power hungry builds we advice to use a USB quick charger to power the USB Power Box. See also the required accessories below.
Compatibility & Use Cases
To make our USB Power Box as flexible as possible you can choose between multiple output connectors.
The list below shows the compatibility for each power type and connector.
- PU Technic Hub
Replaces the original battery case for the Powered Up Technic Hub LEGO.com: 88012 & LEGO.com: 88015 . Also known as Control Plus Hub. A USB-A connector directly connects to your USB Power source. Note: When connecting 2 or more motors it is recommended to use a power adapter of 3 Ampere or higher without current protection. (e.g. when powering 4 LEGO Powered Up motors with 100% power simultaneously, it can consume a lot of power. See the link above.) You can use a USB Power Bank for portable LEGO models. Also see the Required Accessories list below. These LEGO sets all include the LEGO Powered Up Technic Hub:
LEGO Powered Up Technic Hub 88012 - first generation
LEGO Powered Up Technic Hub 88012 - second generation
LEGO Powered Up Technic Battery Box 88015
- PU City Hub
Replaces the original battery case for the Powered Up City Hub LEGO.com: 88009 . Commonly used in LEGO City trains and static LEGO models. A USB-A connector directly connects to your USB Power source. You can use a USB Power Bank for portable LEGO models like trains. Also see the Required Accessories list below. The USB Power Box is installed with 2 screws (just like the original battery case) and it will fit in any pre-existing LEGO models like e.g. LEGO trains. The USB cable can exit the USB Power Box in 5 different directions so you are always able to fit it into place. With the inclusion of 9 LEGO Technic holes you can now also easily connect the hub directly into your LEGO Technic models. You can also use the classic stud system by just pushing in the studs in the sides or bottom. These LEGO sets all include the LEGO Powered Up City Hub
- Power Functions PF/PF
Top and bottom of the power connector is interfaced to the LEGO Power Functions System. A LEGO PF Battery Box, LEGO IR Receiver, Power Controller or SBrick is required to power LEGO (servo) motors or lights. As an example, both the LEGO PF Battery Box Bricklink.com: Part #8881 and Bricklink.com: Part #88000 work great but for some projects they are too big. Important note: Always remove the 6 batteries from a LEGO Battery Box before using the USB Power Box!
If you don’t have a LEGO PF Battery Box or if you don’t want to use one for space saving reasons, you can also use our Power Controller for LEGO in combination with the USB Power Box – Power Functions Connector. Learn more on how to connect all our products on the Motor Power Pack or Power Controller for LEGO.
- AA Battery
Power any (LEGO) 9V device directly like your LEGO Mindstorms (all versions), LEGO Power Functions and many other 9V devices. Only works for devices which originally use 6 AA batteries! Note: For the LEGO Mindstorms it is recommended to use a power adapter of 3 Ampere or higher. (e.g. when powering 3 LEGO Mindstorms motors with 100% power simultaneously, it can consume a lot of power. See the links below.)
Required Accessories
To use the USB Power Box you need a power source and cable. In many cases you already have these at home from your (old) smartphone/tablet. Actually any USB port will work as a power source, even your smart tv, laptop and pc. However it is not always practical and not every USB port can give you the power which you need.
The accessories below are advised to use together with the USB Power Box.
- USB Cables
Amazon.com: Micro USB Power Cable
Amazon.com: USB-A Extension Cable (optional)
- USB Power Source
Amazon.com: USB Quick Charger
Amazon.com: USB Power Bank (for portable LEGO models)

Very convenient

Bought two of the “PU Technic Hub” variety and am very happy with them so far. I am currently using them to power some Lego Control+ models with a 20Ah power bank instead of AA rechargables.
The product is more sturdy than it looks from the images and fits the housing neatly. Shipping to Germany was quick and hassle-free.
If a similar box for Lego Boost becomes available, I am ready to buy it.

The AA battery replacement kit works as intended and is a good solution to never have to change batteries again in any static MOCs. I would have liked to get a sheet with instructions on how to install them, since only one way is correct and I’d have to check the images on the product page to see which way. It would also be nice if there was an option to purchase a compatible charger brick with the set. Otherwise, all good!

It works great with static MOCs or to spare batteries while testing and debugging code… just be careful not to use 4 large angular motors (part 45602) with it because it will drain too much current – I know because I did it :D The large angular motors draw way more current than all the other LEGO motors.

This works a treat as you tend to run the motors for much longer on a GBC than on a vehicle. Great
