It has never been easier to build a complete Great Ball Contraption (GBC) loop yourself! The GBC 43 Rocking Raiser features a clean and reliable conveyor belt which lift the GBC Balls to a variable output height. The GBC can be used as a self contained loop or participate in a GBC layout. Using a more accessible LEGO Set and focusing on one single mechanism this GBC is by far one of the best GBCs to get started.

This GBC is entirely built using only parts from the LEGO Heavy Duty Excavator and can be referred to as model C of the 42121. This GBC makes sure you master the GBC building techniques and tricks so that you eventually also can build your own GBCs. By default the whole machine is powered by hand but it can easily be upgraded with any LEGO motor (more information in the building instructions).

Clean and robust
with smart mechanisms

The main mechanics around the GBC 43 Rocking Raiser is a long conveyor belt. However don’t let you be fooled by the simplicity. Smart mechanisms make sure the drive train cannot break, even when operating the module in the wrong direction, due to the in line clutch mechanism. You can control the height and slope of the conveyor belt. The catch ramp can rotate a full 360 degree which adds a great amount of flexibility. Line them up in line and see how every catch is a win! A simple gear down system makes sure the GBC Balls will not fly of the conveyor belt and exit the belt in a controlled matter. In the end the GBC Balls will roll down back to the input of the GBC via an automatic height adjustable path. While building you will learn about gearing, smart mechanisms, sturdy construction and more.

Fun Fact

We have bought multiple copies of this set which we all gave to our designers. We went through many designs and the combined efforts resulted in this GBC. Although we had many other ideas we decided on the long conveyor belt as this would be an easy to approach beginner module. The GBC 44 Scoop Loupe is a more advanced module.

Power & Automate

Unfortunately LEGO set 42121 doesn’t include a LEGO motor. For that reason, the GBC 43 Rocking Raiser is by default powered by hand. However we designed pre-designed motor mounts so you can easily upgrade the GBC 43 Rocking Raiser with any of the LEGO Motors available and make it go on it’s own.
How cool is that!

1 review for GBC 43 Rocking Raiser – 42121 Building Instructions

  1. Nic K

Nice build! My son (6) loves GBC videos on youtube and this was a perfect way for him to get started. It helps that all the parts come from an existing lego technic set. It means that from 1 technic set he can build 2 models from the original instructions, and then this one and then the other pv productions model that uses 42121. He needed some help for certain steps (and sometimes we had to go back and figure out where he went wrong), but could do a lot himself and he felt really proud of himself when he could see it working with the motor and funnel! Thank you.

If you don't have the required LEGO set there is still a chance you can build our models by using parts you already have. Most technic models use a lot of the same and/or replaceable parts. When watching the video and checking upon the building instructions you can easily see which parts can be replaced if you desire so.
What cool color designs can you come up with?!

Optionally you can also directly import the part list to Rebrickable. Some warnings may pop up during importing due to part/color number inconsistencies between databases. Most of the time these are not to worry about and Rebrickable will give you a nice overview of it.
